Call veterans for wellness checks.

ORGANIZATION: AMERICAN LEGION TATTLER POST 973

A buddy check for veterans is an informal, supportive outreach where a volunteer checks in on a veteran to ensure their well-being-mentally, emotionally, and physically. It’s a simple yet powerful personal connection designed to combat isolation, foster camaraderie, and provide support, particularly around issues like PTSD, depression, or suicidal thoughts.

The caller does not need to be particularly trained, since the first step of buddy checks is just finding out if the phone number is valid and the veteran either answers or has a voicemail set up and talking messages. If the veteran does answer, a simple statement like "I'm calling on behalf of the Tattler Post, we just wanted to see how you are doing?" is plenty. Any details positive or otherwise can be passed on to the Post officer who is organizing the calls.

Calls can be made from anywhere, and the veterans called, while they are mostly in the Chicago area, might be anywhere in the country too.

These calls are often forgotten, you will helping to keep veterans engaged with the organization that strives to serve them. When someone stops coming to meetings and events, we sometimes lose track of them entirely. That's what we're working to head off. Just calling a veteran can boost their spirits considerably.
