According to the CDC, social isolation and loneliness can increase a person's risk for heart disease, stroke, depression, anxiety, suicide, self harm, dementia, and earlier death. Unfortunately, social isolation and loneliness are common for those in hospice care. That's where companion volunteers come in!
Picture this: You're alone in the same room day in, day out, unable to leave your bed. You spend most of your time in pain watching Reba reruns. Your only visitors are people offering to feed you, change you, or help administer your medication. Every day you wake up feeling a little less like yourself. One day you wake up and realize that you've been in this room for a year. You wish something would change, anything to break up the routine. Then, after you've had lunch, a woman who reminds you of your old best friend from Church arrives. She introduces herself and you hit it off right away! You can't remember the last time you laughed, and this new friend has made you laugh twice. It's not much, but it's something different. The spark of connection between you grows into a strong friendship. You look forward to her visits every Wednesday, especially when she brings you your favorite cookies.

Description
Hummingbird Hospice has been serving the San Antonio area for 5 years. Hospice is a philosophy of care that assists patients, family, and friends during the final stages of a terminal illness. We promote dignity and emphasize quality of life for those who choose to die in familiar surroundings with those they love. Hospice services can be provided at home, in a skilled nursing facility, or assisted living center.
We recognize dying as an inevitable, natural process when curative therapy is no longer effective.
We do not hasten or prolong the dying process.
We believe that individual attention and sensitivity to the needs of dying patients will allow them to have a more fulfilling life.
We support the family and friends throughout the illness and assist them after their loved one has passed through the bereavement and grief support program.
