Are you someone who enjoys working with children and wants to make a meaningful difference during a tough time in their lives? The Kids First Program, part of the Hawai'i State Judiciary, is seeking compassionate and dependable volunteers to serve as Children’s Group Facilitators during our family education sessions for those going through divorce or separation.
As a facilitator, you’ll guide small groups of children (ages 6-17) through activities and conversations designed to help them understand and cope with the changes happening in their families. Through games, discussion, art, and storytelling, you'll help each child leave the session with the following key messages:
- Divorce or separation is not your fault
- You are not alone-many families experience this
- Parents separate from each other, not from their kids-parents are forever
- It’s okay to have lots of different feelings about it
- There are ways to cope, including:
- Naming and understanding feelings
- Talking to parents or trusted adults
- Finding healthy activities that bring comfort or fun
You don’t need to be a counselor-just someone who’s a good listener, approachable, and committed to creating a safe and supportive space for children.

Description
Kids First is a program created by the Hawai'i State Judiciary to help families going through divorce or separation, with a special focus on the kids. It’s a required class because we know this time can be confusing, painful, and overwhelming-especially for children.
Every year on O'ahu, around 5,000 divorce cases are filed. About half of those involve children, and in many of those families-roughly 700 cases-there are early disputes over custody or visitation. Parents, judges, and professionals in the community began noticing something important: kids were having a hard time. They were hurting, struggling, and often didn’t understand what was happening.
Research tells us that divorce can affect children in different ways, sometimes for years, if families don’t get the right support. And because divorce and custody issues involve ongoing relationships-not just legal decisions-it’s important to help families build healthy ways of moving forward together.
