About THEATRE DOWNTOWN INC
Location:
900 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, (Performance space), WASHINGTON, DC 20001, US
Mission Statement
The Washington Stage Guild (incorporated as Theatre Downtown, Inc.) was founded in 1986 by a professional company of Washington theatre artists. The Stage Guild quickly established itself as an indispensable component of downtown and the D.C. theatre scene, staging over 135 productions in six different homes over the ensuing 39 seasons. The company’s acclaimed repertoire of neglected classics, unfamiliar works by familiar playwrights, and stimulating new plays from around the world, is presented in a style that is the Guild’s own--direct and clear, with a strong commitment to adhering to the author’s intent.
Description
The Washington Stage Guild is professional theatre operating on a small professional theatre contract with Actors' Equity Association. We are committed to producing eloquent plays of idea and argument, passion and wit - plays from all periods of world drama presented by a classical ensemble with a contemporary sensibility - smart theatre for a smart town! We produce four full productions each season - roughly from August through May. 2025-26 will be our 40th Season producing theatre in Washington, D.C.
Since its founding, the Stage Guild has been committed to non-traditional casting, believing that the best actor should play a role, regardless of race. As a result, our productions have often featured BIPOC, non-binary, and neurodivergant actors in leading roles, and in families with siblings, parents, and romantic interests of different ethnicities and backgrounds. This has been expanded to include a more diverse pool of directors, designers, and technicians.
