Join the Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) for a volunteer stewardship session on Saturday, June 21st, 2025.

There will be two volunteer sessions, 9 AM - 11 AM or 12 PM - 2 PM. Come to one or both!

Volunteers will work under the guidance of the FOPOS stewardship staff to perform ecological restoration work and invasive species removal in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.

What to expect: Our volunteer sessions start with a short presentation about the scope of work for the day. We will then walk to the project site. Volunteers will learn to identify and remove invasive plants, as well as assist with native plantings during some spring and fall sessions. The stewardship skills learned at these sessions can easily be applied to restoring habitat in your own backyard.

Why this work is important: The current focus is the 25-acre riparian restoration project that buffers Mountain Lake and portions of its feeder streams. Riparian areas play an important role in protecting water quality by slowing down stormwater and filtering out pollutants before they enter the water system. Water that flows through Mountain Lakes Park ultimately finds its way into the Raritan River, an important drinking water source for central New Jersey. Riparian areas also provide critical habitat for birds, insects, and aquatic life.

Meetup Location: Mountain Lakes House Parking lot, 57 Mountain Ave, Princeton NJ, 08540. Be sure to drive down the long paved driveway entrance to the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, marked by a series of black mail boxes. The gravel parking lot is on your left about a 1/2 mile down the driveway.

About FOPOS: Founded in 1969, FOPOS has been working to preserve and protect natural spaces in the greater Princeton area for more than 50 years. As a part of our work, we rely on volunteers to help make progress when it comes to restoration work such as our current forest and riparian restoration projects in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.

About Friends of Princeton Open Space

Location:

57 Mountain Ave, Princeton, NJ 08540, US

Mission Statement

Founded in 1969, we are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization devoted to the following:

In Princeton: Acquiring open space for preservation, protecting natural resources, maintaining and extending trails and providing environmental education.

In the Princeton Region: Working with other groups to support efforts to preserve and protect open space and the environment.

Description

Friends of Princeton Open Space is a non-profit organization that has helped establish over 1,000 acres of parkland and a network of interconnecting trails that nearly circles Princeton. Through the contributions of hundreds of people in the community, FOPOS helped to raise $4.5 million for the purchase of land and acquisition of easements on properties that might have been bulldozed for development. In addition to property acquisition, FOPOS also leads in land stewardship, from creating and maintaining hiking trails, including boardwalks and footbridges, to the removal of invasive species and the replanting of native varieties. FOPOS sponsors nature walks and plant workshops that are free and open to the public.
