Volunteer Position: Landscaping & Gardening Volunteer

Location: USACE Chena Flood Control Project, North Pole, Alaska

Department: Operations Division

Reports To: Natural Resources Specialist / Park Ranger

Position Summary:

The Chena Flood Control Project is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to assist with landscaping and gardening efforts at the project site. Volunteers will play a vital role in maintaining the natural beauty and functionality of public areas by planting, weeding, mulching, and assisting with trail beautification and vegetation management.

This opportunity is perfect for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, have a passion for native plants and the environment, and want to support public lands and recreational areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planting and maintaining flower beds, shrubs, and native vegetation
  • Weeding, pruning, and mulching landscaped areas
  • Assisting in erosion control and revegetation efforts
  • Supporting the upkeep of pollinator gardens and interpretive plantings
  • Helping with seasonal cleanup of outdoor areas and public use spaces
  • Collaborating with staff on habitat improvement and public access projects
  • Following environmental and safety guidelines set by USACE staff

Qualifications:

  • Interest in gardening, landscaping, or environmental stewardship
  • Ability to perform light to moderate physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and take direction from USACE staff
  • Previous gardening experience is helpful but not required
  • Must be at least 16 years old (volunteers under 18 require parental consent)

Time Commitment:

Flexible scheduling is available. A minimum commitment of 4-6 hours per month is preferred during the growing season (May-September).
