Are you a mobile app developer with a passion for wildlife and a desire to contribute to a meaningful cause? Wildlife.ai, a New Zealand environmental non-profit dedicated to harnessing the power of technology for conservation, is seeking a motivated volunteer to help us complete the development of our Wildlife Watcher mobile app.

This is a unique opportunity to join a passionate team at the forefront of conservation technology. The mobile app is a critical component of our new open-source wildlife camera trap, the "Wildlife Watcher." This innovative device empowers community groups and researchers to monitor and protect our planet's precious biodiversity. The accompanying mobile app will connect to the camera via Bluetooth, allowing users to configure settings, manage data, and view captured images directly in the field.

The mobile app is already half-developed, and the repository is available on GitHub for you to explore: https://github.com/wildlifeai/wildlife-watcher-mobile-app. We are looking for someone to build upon the existing framework and help us bring this vital tool to life.

About the Role

As a volunteer mobile app developer, you will be responsible for:

  • Completing the development of the Wildlife Watcher mobile app. This will involve working with the existing codebase to implement new features and refine existing ones.
  • Integrating Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) functionality to ensure seamless communication between the app and the camera trap. This is a fantastic opportunity for those with an interest in IoT devices and hands-on experience with BLE data acquisition.
  • Collaborating with our team of dedicated conservationists and tech experts to ensure the app meets the needs of our users.
  • Contributing to a project with a real-world impact. The Wildlife Watcher and its accompanying app will revolutionize how wildlife is monitored, providing crucial data for conservation efforts.
Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking a volunteer who:

  • Has experience in mobile app development (e.g., React Native, Flutter, Swift, or Kotlin).
  • Possesses a strong understanding of Bluetooth connectivity.
  • Enjoys creating small projects with hardware like Raspberry Pis and has an interest in working with devices like Nordic Semiconductor prototype boards.
  • Is a proactive problem-solver with a keen eye for detail.
  • Is passionate about wildlife conservation and eager to use their skills to make a difference.
Why Volunteer with Wildlife.ai?
  • Make a tangible impact: Your work will directly contribute to the protection of endangered species and their habitats.
  • Gain unique experience: This project offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge conservation technology, including IoT devices and BLE data acquisition.
  • Join a passionate community: Collaborate with a global team of experts and volunteers who are dedicated to our mission.
  • Flexible and remote: Contribute to the project from anywhere in the world, on a schedule that works for you.
  • Enhance your portfolio: This is an excellent opportunity to add a unique and impactful project to your portfolio.

If you are ready to use your technical skills to help us build a brighter future for wildlife, we would love to hear from you.
