We have recently launched a chapter for Youth Advocates, and we are looking for interest in teens.
Youth Advocates will organize and host events, specialize in a specific light pollution effect, attend community meetings, and get tons of leadership connections+opportunities! Youth Advocates should allocate at least 1 hour a week. Application is due by July 1st, 2025. We will email you with results and more information by the end of July. Mission Statement
At DarkSky NOVA, our mission is to advocate for the protection of the nighttime environment and protect our communities from the harmful effects of light pollution. We educate the public and policymakers about night sky conservation and light pollution, as well as promote responsible outdoor light at night based on the 5 principles of responsible outdoor lighting. DarkSky NOVA is the Northern Virginia chapter of DarkSky International. Light pollution is harmful for human health, wildlife, money and energy, climate change, and our view of the beautiful night sky.
Description
DarkSky NOVA is a new chapter of DarkSky International, and we have made many achievements already.
We have established relationships and partnerships within our communities and with other organizations also involved in stopping light pollution. We host outreach events at local national park, libraries, county parks, and with other organizations. Furthermore, we have collaborated for Joint Requestor for proclamations for International Dark Sky Week sponsored by DarkSky International. We speak to groups and organizations interested in learning about light pollution and its impacts. Lastly, we advocate for outdoor lighting ordinances through testifying at local government council and board meetings.
Our goal is to mobilize Northern Virginians who care about our planet, and human health. We have countless opportunities and many vistas to join our cause. Join us in our fight against light pollution today!
