Are you a patient, creative, and compassionate educator or education student with experience or interest in special education? We are seeking a dedicated volunteer tutor for a remarkable adult learner who is just beginning his literacy journey.

Our student is a vibrant 32-year-old man who enjoys dancing, sports, hiking, and community activities. He is engaging, sociable, and brings joy to those around him. Due to early life brain injury, he has unique learning needs and is just beginning to explore reading and writing. He communicates in English and Korean and is supported by a deeply devoted family.

His Goals Are Simple but Meaningful:

  • Learn to recognize and name letters of the alphabet

  • Understand basic letter sounds

  • Learn to print and write his name

  • Begin reading basic signs and simple words

About South Bay Literacy Council

Location:

18436 Hawthorne Blvd., Suite 110, Torrance, CA 90504, US

Mission Statement

Because we believe literacy is life-changing and empowering, we volunteer to teach adults to read, write, and speak English for free.

Description

The South Bay Literacy Council (SBLC) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching adults over 18 to read, write and speak English.

For more than 40 years, SBLC has provided group and individual tutoring in Torrance, Hawthorne, Gardena, Wilmington and other South Bay-Los Angeles communities. Since COVID-19 restrictions, we have been tutoring online.

Our training workshops equip volunteers to teach adults how to read, write, and speak English.

Headquartered in Torrance, the organization is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America. We are staffed and operated entirely by volunteers. The council relies solely on private sector donations and receives no government funding.

There is an urgent, ongoing need for more trained volunteers for tutoring and for management support. Be part of the solution and make a real difference in someone's life.
