Position Summary: The Vice President of United Social Services Inc. (USS) is a vital leadership figure who supports the Board & Founder/President & CEO in advancing the mission, vision, and strategic direction of the organization. This role serves as both a governance leader and an organizational ambassador, ensuring that USS remains mission-aligned, compliant, and impactful in its service to the community.
This position requires a monthly time commitment of 15 volunteer hours, which includes participation in board meetings, events, strategic planning sessions, and community engagements. Board members are also required to contribute board dues as part of their commitment to supporting USS’s long-term sustainability.
This is a hybrid position and reports to the Board of Directors and the Board President.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Board Leadership & Governance
Attend all scheduled board meetings (annual, regular, and special), events, and planning retreats.
In the absence of the President, preside over board and executive committee meetings.
Collaborate with the Founder/President & CEO in preparing board meeting agendas and ensuring meetings run effectively and inclusively.
Ensure the board has up-to-date and approved policies to maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, IRS guidelines, articles of incorporation, and bylaws.
Assist in reviewing and updating organizational policies and procedures as needed.
2. Board Development and Oversight
Partner with the Founder/President & CEO to assess the performance of board members and committees.
Support the recruitment, orientation, training, and development of new and existing board members.
Monitor board member attendance, engagement, and fulfillment of responsibilities, including committee participation and fundraising efforts.
3. Strategic and Operational Support
Work alongside the Founder/President & CEO to ensure board directives, policies, and resolutions are effectively executed across the organization.
Help develop and refine impact metrics to track program outcomes and organizational effectiveness.
Serve as a thought partner to the Founder/President & CEO on matters of strategic importance and organizational growth.
4. Fundraising and Public Engagement
Actively engage in fundraising efforts, including the cultivation of major donors, individual gifts, and foundation grants.
Attend and help organize fundraising events, social functions, and public speaking opportunities that promote USS’s mission.
Serve as an ambassador and advocate for USS, effectively communicating the organization’s mission, programs, and impact to stakeholders, partners, and the community.
5. Compliance and Accountability
Ensure that all board members are aware of their legal and ethical responsibilities and that the board as a whole remains compliant with nonprofit governance best practices.
Support the board president in leading board self-assessments and implementing improvements based on feedback and evaluations.
Additional Expectations:
Time Commitment: Minimum of 15 volunteer hours per month, including board meetings, committee work, community engagement, and fundraising.
Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality of sensitive organizational discussions, board matters, and documents at all times.

Our primary focus is on supporting at-risk, homeless, LGBTQ, and aged-out foster care young adults ages 18-24. Additionally, we serve individuals with disabilities, senior citizens, and families in need. USS has consistently worked to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families in need. Through dedication, innovation, and strategic action, we have achieved significant milestones, including serving over 800 individuals during the COVID pandemic and over 1,000 individuals post-COVID. Despite challenges, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing essential support, ensuring that the needs of those we serve remain our top priority.
