ORGANIZATION: Humane Action Pennsylvania

Position Overview

As a Community Outreach Speaker with Humane Action Pennsylvania (HAP), you'll play a critical role in educating and inspiring the public about our campaigns that protect animals, the environment, and public health. Our presentations cover topics such as plastic pollution, animal protection laws, the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, and coexisting with wildlife. Speaking opportunities may include schools, workplaces, religious institutions, community events, and more-ranging from intimate gatherings to large assemblies.

HAP provides training and materials-you bring your voice, enthusiasm, and a passion for change.

Purpose of the Position
  • Inspire diverse audiences to care about and take action for animals and the planet

  • Provide communities with accessible, action-driven tools to promote sustainable and compassionate living

  • Help amplify HAP’s programs across the Greater Pittsburgh region through strategic public engagement

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Represent HAP in a professional and non-partisan manner during public presentations

  • Proactively identify and contact institutions to create new speaking opportunities

  • Coordinate scheduling with schools, employers, faith leaders, and event organizers

  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate, and mission-aligned presentations on a variety of topics

  • Prepare in advance for each event, including reviewing the material, emailing handouts, and discussing logistics with hosts

  • Arrive early, follow all security and visitor procedures, and allow time for Q&A and wrap-up

  • Collect honoraria when appropriate and provide required documentation to institutions

  • Maintain timely communication with HAP leadership (responding to emails/calls within 2 business days)

  • Share and support HAP’s mission and adhere to its policies

  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Comfortable speaking in front of diverse groups of all sizes

  • Ability to energize and motivate an audience

  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn HAP’s campaign topics

  • Basic computer literacy and ability to operate PowerPoint, a projector, and Zoom

  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently

  • Professional and friendly demeanor with an ability to follow instructions and meet deadlines

  • Reliable transportation around the Greater Pittsburgh area

  • Working knowledge of Google Drive, Trello, and Dropbox preferred (training available)

Time Commitment Required

Average of 3-5 hours per week, depending on outreach efforts and speaking opportunities. Availability on evenings and weekends is often required.

Training Requirements

All speakers will receive:

  • Orientation on HAP’s mission, core values, and campaign content

  • Access to presentation materials and talking points

Location
  • In-person presentations at institutions across the Greater Pittsburgh Area

  • Occasional remote opportunities via Zoom

Dress Code
  • Professional attire required for presentations and meetings

  • For informal events, volunteers are encouraged to wear a HAP t-shirt (provided to volunteer)
