ORGANIZATION: Make-A-Wish Central New York

A healthcare professional office volunteer will assist Make-A-Wish Central New York chapter staff to help bridge the gap between parents, the chapter staff and the healthcare community. A healthcare professional office volunteer may work with a variety of chapter staff members on varying projects depending on the needs of the chapter at any given point in time. The healthcare professional office volunteer may have the opportunity to help the chapter with process innovations, problem solving and/or solutioning around impediments to wish granting with medically complex children.

Location of Opportunity

This role is in our chapter office at 5005 Campuswood Drive, East Syracuse.

Volunteer Commitment

· Days and hours are flexible; however, h ealthcare professional office volunteers are asked to commit to working a two to four-hour shift during normal business hours 9:00am-5:00pm , Monday-Friday.

· Agree to assist the office 1-2 times each week.

· Offsite work and/or evening hours may be permitted depending on the project.

· Complete criminal background check every 3 years and Conflict of Interest & Ethics Assurance Statement annually.

· Complete appropriate training as deemed appropriate by chapter staff.

· Attend continuing education courses, as offered by Make-A-Wish chapter staff.

· Provide and receive ongoing performance evaluation feedback from chapter staff.

Desired Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant. Pediatric experience is very helpful.
  • Experience and comfort navigating the complexities of healthcare systems.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of illness and the medical community.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with non-verbal, developmentally delayed, or cognitively impaired children helpful.
  • Comfort and skill in contacting families and healthcare providers to discuss eligibility or health status.
  • Knowledge in Microsoft programs, such as Word and Excel helpful.
  • Excellent people skills with the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Bilingual abilities in spoken form a plus.
