- Parkrose Middle School - 11800 NE Shaver St, Portland, OR 97220 - Thursdays 2:00-5:15pm
- Menlo Park Elementary School - 12900 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97230 - Thursday 12:00-4:00pm
Program Description: TheHunger Relief program works with the Oregon Food bank and other organizations to help support people and communities facing food insecurity in Portland. We currently support 16 food pantries in the Portland Metro Area and reach approx. 600 people per week.
Position Summary: The primary audiences that the volunteer will be serving are immigrants, refugees, and low-income families in our school communities. We prioritize volunteers who can commit to an ongoing, regular schedule. Food pantry volunteers will be assisting with the following tasks including but not limited to:
- Load and unload food truck deliveries.
- Sort and bag produce and other food items.
- Set up tables for food items and organize items as directed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked pantry free of debris at end of volunteer shift.
- Help to move and organize food to prepare the pantry for families that shop.
- Welcome and interact with shoppers in a friendly manner.
- Help shoppers understand and follow quantity limits to ensure all families have equal access.
- Training will be provided to volunteers through videos and while performing tasks.
Qualifications:
- No previous experience required.
- Multilingual candidates are welcomed to apply - ability to speak Standard Chinese/ Mandarin is a huge asset as many of the shoppers are from this community.
- Have effective communication skills.
- Be a team player, collaborate well with others, and demonstrate a positive attitude.
- Be punctual, follow directions well, and carry out the commitments of the position.
- Follow all food health and safety guidelines and requirements.
- Maintain food preparation tools, including cleaning and disinfecting instruments and equipment before and after use.
Time Commitment: We are looking for dedicated volunteers that can commit to 1 day a week for a minimum commitment of 3 months.
Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older
- Must pass background check
- Must have the ability to lift up to 25lbs.
