Sleeping Bear Dunes is seeking local volunteers to serve as docents in the historic village of Glen Haven, helping visitors connect with the area's rich heritage and stories.
Position Description:
As a Volunteer Interpreter, you will play a key role in enhancing visitor experiences across the park. Your primary responsibilities include staffing the historic town of Glen Haven, where you will:
Staff the Life-Saving Station maritime museum, sharing stories of maritime history and safety
Staff the Cannery Boat Museum, engaging visitors with exhibits the cherry canning history and Great Lakes boats.
Assist or apprentice at the working Blacksmith Shop (optional), demonstrating traditional blacksmithing techniques
Serve at the Visitor Center in Empire, providing visitors with information, orientation, and park insights
This role offers a meaningful opportunity to connect visitors with the park’s rich heritage and natural beauty while developing your interpretation and customer service skills.
Time Commitment:
4-7 hours per week from end of May to mid October.
Volunteer shifts are 7 days a week, 10:30-2:15 and/or 2:00-5:00.
