As a Companionship Hospice Volunteer, you will provide emotional support and companionship to hospice patients, helping to ease feelings of loneliness and isolation during their end-of-life journey. Your presence brings comfort, connection, and dignity to individuals facing life-limiting illness.
Key Responsibilities:
Spend one-on-one time with hospice patients through conversation, reading aloud, playing music, watching TV, or simply sitting quietly together.
Offer companionship and emotional support tailored to each patient’s preferences and needs.
Provide respite for family members or caregivers by staying with the patient for short periods.
Communicate regularly with hospice staff to share updates and ensure patient comfort.
Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to hospice policies and guidelines.
Qualifications:
Compassionate, dependable, and emotionally mature.
Strong listening skills and ability to be fully present.
Comfortable with silence, grief, and the realities of end-of-life care.
Willing to complete hospice volunteer training, including orientation on boundaries and communication.
Must be respectful of all cultural, spiritual, and personal beliefs.
Commitment:
Typically 1-2 hours per visit, with a flexible schedule based on availability and patient needs.
Visits take place in patient homes, assisted living communities, or hospice facilities.
A 6-month commitment is preferred.
