About Backpacks for America:

Join Backpacks for America in our mission to provide basic living necessities to individuals experiencing homelessness in the Greater Boston area. We are a passionate and dedicated organization seeking a creative and enthusiastic volunteer to help us amplify our message, engage our community, and ultimately drive donations to support our vital work.

Role Overview:

As our Volunteer Social Media & Marketing Coordinator, you will play a key role in building our online presence and connecting with our community. You will be responsible for managing our social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn), creating engaging content (writing posts, taking photos and videos), and scheduling posts to maintain a consistent presence. You will also interact with our online community by responding to comments and messages, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to social media advertising efforts. Beyond social media, you will assist with email outreach, the creation of flyers, provide support at our events, and capture impactful moments through photography and videography. This is a flexible, primarily remote opportunity with occasional needs for in-person support at events around the Greater Boston area. You will work closely with our dedicated Board of Directors to develop and implement effective marketing strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop engaging and informative content for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn aligned with our brand and mission.
  • Create visually appealing photos and videos to accompany social media posts and marketing materials.
  • Schedule and post content across all platforms to maintain a consistent online presence.
  • Actively engage with our online community by responding to comments and messages in a timely and friendly manner.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of social media advertising campaigns to increase reach and engagement.
  • Support email marketing efforts, including drafting and sending outreach emails.
  • Design and create visually appealing flyers and other marketing materials using Canva and Microsoft Office.
  • Provide on-site support at events in the Greater Boston area, including capturing photos and videos.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors on marketing strategies and initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing social media accounts for an organization or business is preferred.
  • Experience creating a content calendar spanning multiple channels and platforms.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) and best practices.
  • Experience with Canva and Microsoft Office suite (Word, Publisher) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Teams and Outlook for communication and collaboration.
  • Passion for the mission of Backpacks for America and a desire to make a meaningful contribution.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong writing and communication skills with a friendly, motivating, and engaging tone.
  • Proficiency in taking and editing photos and videos for online use.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.

Time Commitment:

Part Time - flexible hours. Hours may fluctuate, however estimated at 2-7 hours per week.

Backpacks for America’s mission is to assist those within our most vulnerable communities by purchasing, packaging and distributing basic living necessities.

Description

Backpacks for America is a 501c3 charity organization located in the Greater Boston Area that collects donations to purchase backpacks and living necessities and distribute them to people experiencing homelessness in our communities. We partner with other local non-profit organizations to ensure our backpacks reach those who need it the most in order to survive the harsh New England winters.

Backpacks for America officially formed in 2022, however started as a GoFundMe fundraiser in 2019 as a way for us to give back to the community. Over the years we have given hundreds of backpacks to individuals and families that experience homelessness. If you feel like you want to give back to your community, and want to make a difference with a grassroots organization, please consider joining our mission!
