Hensley Settlement Caretaker

On top of the Cumberland Mountain lies the remnants of a community, the Hensley Settlement. From this community, several cabins and historic structures remain that tells the story of life in Appalachia. To help protect this community, Cumberland Gap is looking for two volunteers as caretakers.
Duties include:
• Assists interpretive rangers with tours.
• Conduct living history demonstrations.
• Provides informal tours, information, and assistance to visitors.
• Rove settlement to ensure that buildings are locked and secure when tours are not in operation.
• Maintain cemetery, keep leaves, grass and debris clear from the base of the headstones.
• Keep buildings clean, dusted and swept.
• Rove trails and backcountry camp sites (Hensley Camp, Chadwell Gap and Martin’s Fork), report conditions.
• Works with maintenance staff at the settlement.
• Remove trash from trash cans when NPS staff is unavailable.
• Assist with organized events at the settlement.
• Use of hand tools including: fire rake, cutting tools, shovels, clippers, etc. Will be provided training.
• Removal of debris and brush from trails and fields.
• Appropriate use of park radio.
• POSSIBLE use of government vehicles with valid driver’s license and NPS approved Defensive Driver Training.
• Will use their own vehicle to drive up to the settlement and must have 4-wheel drive.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
You will live in a modernized historic cabin that has one bedroom and must be willing to share a room. The cabin is fully furnished and has electricity and water.
