Innisfree Village is a residential, life-sharing community with adults with intellectual disabilities in a rural, therapeutic farm environment. The true work of Innisfree is the people-to-people relationships that develop in the course of daily living and community sharing. We are seeking residential volunteers who are compassionate, enthusiastic, and committed to a one year service experience.
At Innisfree, we seek volunteers who are drawn to the beauty of rural living, are passionate about serving others, and are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Our volunteers play a vital role in creating a community that thrives on mutual respect and collaboration, fostering an environment where everyone has the opportunity to grow and contribute in meaningful ways.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Assures the daily care, health, and human rights of those with whom they live and/or supervise
- Oversees the upkeep and maintenance of the house in which they live
- Manages household finances, keeping an eye on frugal spending, maintaining adequate balances, paying all outstanding bills, and completing monthly ledgers
- Attends all periodic community meetings
- Works daily in community workstations
- Reads past records and completes all required written reports in a timely fashion
- Works in close liaison with the Director, office, board, families, and fellow volunteers in all decisions which have a great impact on the lives of those who make Innisfree home
- Abides by all guidelines and policies set forth by the Village Handbook
- Fulfills the length of service commitment made at the time of acceptance, giving two months’ notice of departure
- Exhibits a full and rich participation in community life and activities
Volunteer Qualifications:
- One-year service commitment, with the option of additional year(s) of service
- The volunteer will work 5 days per week
- Candidates will have the equivalent of a high school diploma. Further college comparable experience is a plus
- Candidates will be at least 18 years of age
- Candidates exhibit patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor
- Experience working with adults with disabilities is preferred, but not required
- Volunteers must consent to a background check screening, a State of Virginia criminal history check, and a U.S. or International Driving Record check
- Training will be provided as a 1-month trial orientation period, with structured instruction and extensive hands-on training
- The volunteer must have a current negative TB (tuberculosis) screening
- First-year volunteers are not permitted to have pets
Volunteer Benefits:
- $800 monthly stipend (for personal expenses)
- 2 Consecutive days off per week
- 15 Paid vacation days ($75 per day) and 5 unpaid holidays
- Health insurance (U.S. volunteers only)

- Student loan deferral, financial loan support offered after one year
- Training in first aid, CPR, medical assistance, and personal care
