Volunteer positions within Maintenance / Facilities at Steamtown NHS support and assist National Park Service (NPS) staff in maintaining operational readiness and visitor safety through skilled trade work and preventive maintenance. The Maintenance / Facilities - Groundskeeping Assistant role contributes directly to this mission by contributes directly to this mission by helping care for exterior spaces through landscaping, seasonal cleanup, signage, and general upkeep.
This position supports Steamtown’s broader goals of operational efficiency, visitor safety, and environmental stewardship. Volunteers serve as stewards of this mission by applying hands-on skills to help ensure that the park’s outdoor spaces remain accessible, attractive, and well-maintained for the enjoyment of all.
Tasks may vary based on the individual’s experience, skills, and current park needs. All work must follow established safety procedures and Steamtown NHS standards. Assignments are typically performed under supervision, with appropriate training and guidance provided for all duties.
Maintenance / Facilities - Groundskeeping Assistant responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with routine groundskeeping tasks such as litter pickup, sweeping, and upkeep of walkways and public areas.
- Supporting maintenance of landscaped features such as planter boxes, trees, shrubs, and small green spaces through weeding, trimming, watering, or mulching.
- Helping move or set up park furnishings, temporary signs, or barricades for special events or seasonal operations.
- Assisting with minor exterior maintenance such as touch-up painting, graffiti removal, or light repairs to signage and fixtures.
- Operating approved grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., leaf blowers, push mowers, weed trimmers) under staff supervision and in accordance with park safety policies. Note: Equipment may require prior certification or NPS authorization.
- Supporting seasonal tasks including snow removal, de-icing, leaf clearing, and debris management as needed.
- Maintaining a clean and safe work environment by properly storing tools, supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE) after use.
- Supporting special event setup and teardown, including outdoor cleaning and logistics.
