SF Civic Tech is looking for an experienced project lead and product manager who is passionate about education and building tools that support teachers and students.

About Project Compass

10% of students in SFUSD have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that details specific academic and behavioral goals. Data collection is both the backbone and achilles heel of this system. Good data provides guidance and proof of progress but is also onerous to collect. Compass aims to help our teachers and students by making data collection simpler, more flexible and maybe even a little fun. Compass is being developed entirely by volunteers as a free, open-source web application. We currently have a MVP prototype nearing completion.

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for Compass with potential educational partners and supporters to be alpha/beta/pilot users
  • Recruit and project manage volunteer designers to iterate on and evaluate the design of Compass through user and usability testing
  • Recruit and project manage volunteer developers building the web application
  • Lead regular team meetings/check-ins/planning
  • Problem-solve and un-block team issues impeding progress

Ideal Qualifications

  • Experience leading/managing a technology project
  • Experience launching a web technology product to real customers/users
  • Experience with customer discovery/outreach
  • Passionate about education, edtech

About SF Civic Tech

Mission Statement

We are a welcoming and inclusive volunteer group of developers, designers, data geeks, and citizen activists who use creative technology to solve civic and social problems.

Description

SF Civic Tech was originally founded in 2013 as Code for San Francisco, part of the Code for America Brigade Network. After the sunsetting of the Code for America Brigade Program in 2023, the organization renamed itself to SF Civic Tech in 2024. SF Civic Tech is a member of the Alliance of Civic Technologists.

SF Civic Tech is a group of people, first and foremost. We also call ourselves technologists, planners, designers, doers, thinkers, and activists. Each week, we actively work together to improve the City and County of San Francisco, often using technology to support our efforts. By connecting people, organizations, resources, tools, and networks to build for San Francisco, we will all thrive.

SF Civic Tech is a safe space for experimentation, learning and practicing skills, taking chances, and asking questions, all to affect and encourage positive change. Whenever possible, we proactively reach out to those who are left out, excluded, ignored, or discriminated against. Those people, in our opinion, represent our most desirable source for experiences, knowledge, and thoughts. We fail without their involvement.
