Volunteering at M. A. R. E. is a fun, hands- on way to make a real difference in the lives of individuals with special needs- all while spending time with amazing horses! Whether you're grooming, leading, sidewalking during lessons, or helping around the barn, you'll be part of a supportive team making magic happen every day. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old, enjoy working with children and horses, and be comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of weather. The role can be physically active- expect to walk or jog alongside horses, lift up to 30 lbs, and be on your feet for extended periods. No horse experience? No problem- training is provided! If you’re ready to learn new skills, make new friends, and be part of something truly special, M. A. R. E. is the place for you.

Mission Statement

Founded in 1990 by Diane Hopkins; Ron, Dorothy and Matt Evans; Angela and Mary Litterilla. M.A.R.E. (Mastering Abilities Riding Equines) was born allowing special needs children and adults in Kern County to experience freedom of movement, freedom of spirit, and freedom from judgment. M.A.R.E. provides "hope on horseback." M.A.R.E. is where miracles happen one stride at a time. Beginning in 1990, M.A.R.E. held premier accredited center status through the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association which became PATH Int’l. M.A.R.E. is currently a member center in good standing with PATH Int’l (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship). M.A.R.E.’s exceptional equestrians participate in weekly equine-assisted therapies and activities that are designed to improve their performance of daily living activities, and enrich their social and recreational experiences.

Description

MARE offers several levels of volunteer opportunities. Every volunteer starts with barn chores, filling waters, cleaning stalls, sweeping, etc. Next is Sidewalking, where a volunteer can provide safety and support to a rider during their lesson by walking alongside the horse. Sidewalkers get to participate in activites in the lesson ans interact with our wonderful riders. Beyond that is Horse-Leading. This is where a volunteer is taught to groom and tack a horse for a lesson, then lead that horse for the entirety of the lesson, providing a good experience for the rider.

Volunteering at MARE allows for time spent with horses, socialization within the volunteer community, and the chance to interact with our special needs students.

MARE offers the opportunity to recieve the Presidential Award, once proven that you are a dedicated volunteer.
