ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

The purpose of the Customer Service Representative Volunteer is to assist the Black Hills National Forest (BKNF) with an array of visitor services and public-related duties at the various Ranger Districts across the Forest; serving as a front-line volunteer that engages the public with meaningful conversations and to create memorable visitor experiences. Routine operations include the staffing of an information desk, answering visitor questions, providing directions and information of surrounding public lands and private attractions, and responding to calls and information requests.

The position may also be involved in the assembly of information packets for future travelers, education packets for schools and/or students, and administrative packets related to resource management activities near private property and/or other public lands. Volunteers may also be asked to work booths at Trade Shows, Sports Shows, and other public gatherings that promote (and market) Forest-related activities. And finally, volunteers may be asked to provide support assistance with District-specific special events, such as Smokey Bear programs, Junior Forest Ranger activities, and other family-oriented events. In short, the purpose of this volunteer position is to engage with the public in positive and meaningful ways that create solid first impressions of the agency and Forest.

NOTE: The 32-hour per week schedule relates to volunteer applicants that desire government housing with the position. However, volunteers from the local area are welcome to apply and work a limited number of days / hours ... as housing may not be needed.
