Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Alchesay/Williams Creek is in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona filled with an abundance of recreational opportunities and a wonderful climate. This two-facility complex provides non-native recreational sport fish (rainbow, brown and brook trout) to our Tribal partners in Arizona and New Mexico. Additionally, the facility houses the world's only broodstock of the threatened Apache trout and has annual production goals for the stocking of these fish for recreational fishing opportunities.

Assists in collecting data on hatchery populations to study health and propagation methods. Fish hatchery operations and studies on efficiency may cover breeding, rearing, and/or growing fish in tanks or raceways, caring for fertilized eggs in trays, observing fish behavior in response to feeding, cleaning, and husbandry operations, determining feed regiments, treating fish disease, collecting and recording data (hard copy and digital). Assists hatchery crew in providing daily care to fish in an aquaculture facility. Performs assignments and general maintenance required for general fish hatchery upkeep and maintenance including simple hand tools or power equipment, landscaping tools (grass mowers, shrub trimmers, etc.), and other tools for minor repairs on hatchery equipment.

About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Location:

5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: NWRS Visitor Services, Bailey’s Crossroads, VA 22041, US

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
