Off Road Vehicle volunteers work with the Visitor and Resource Protection Staff to manage off road vehicles on North Banks at Cape Lookout National Seashore. Volunteers will provide visitor infor mation services, check permits, and report potential hazards. Volunteers must be physically able to the walk the island, while being exposed to extreme sun, heat, humidity, wind, and buggy environments. Volunteers are required to ride on boats over open water. Interacting with the public is required. Volunteers must have a valid drivers license.
Volunteers in this position should be able to communicate with a wide variety of visitors with a positive attitude, answer specific questions about the park’s policies, and show passion for serving the public. The volunteer will be expected to intervene when visitors do not have an off road vehicle permit. Volunteers will be issued a uniform to wear while driving on the beach.
Volunteers must commit to one, 9-hour shift per month. Volunteers have the choice of which Friday each both they will volunteer for. The positions will be competitive because there are limited spots available.
Major Duties:
- Greets visitors and provides information and assistance with ORV permits.
- Issue ORV permits to visitors who do not have their sticker.
- Inform visitors about closures on the beach.
- Assist Visitor and Resource Protection (VRP) in signs and mile markers on the beach.
- Assist resource management in putting up and taking down closures.
- Volunteers MAY NOT sell ice or gas to anyone at any time.
- Issue ORV decals to visitors who have already purchased their ORV permit online but have not had a decal issued to them.
- Notify law enforcement rangers of visitors who are out of compliance.
- Volunteers are required to carry a park service radio with them while on duty.
In the "any other additional qualifications?" section please indication if you are physically able to make long walks on the island in a dynamic setting, consisting of sandy and muddy terrain, extreme sun, heat, humidity, wind, and buggy environments.
Housing is not available for this position.
Volunteers will operate a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV).
