About Torrance Art Museum

Location:

3320 Civic Center Drive Torrance, CA 90503, Torrance, CA 90503, US

Mission Statement

Torrance Art Museum encourages people to develop their understanding and appreciation of modern and contemporary artwork via exhibitions in its two gallery spaces. It also gives the public access to educational programs, artist talks, lectures, and symposia. Through its emphasis on contemporary artistic expression in Southern California and globally, the Torrance Art Museum brings together visual artists and community members; fosters personal and civic well-being by inspiring understanding and appreciation of the visual arts; promotes meaningful experiences in the arts to strengthen creative and critical thinking skills; and builds bridges between the visual arts and other disciplines in the humanities and sciences.

Description

Originally established in 1964 as the Joslyn Recreation Center with support from the Marcellus L. Joslyn Foundation, the facility evolved into a dedicated arts center in the late 1970s. Driven by community interest and leadership from the City of Torrance, it became a space for contemporary art exhibitions, education, and engagement. Following a major renovation completed in 2004, the center reopened as the Torrance Art Museum. Today, TAM serves as a vital cultural hub, showcasing contemporary art through exhibitions, programs, and partnerships within the Torrance Cultural Arts Center.
