DL Vols one on one

LiteracyCNY is seeking volunteers for a pilot program to help adults access their My Social Security account online. My Social Security is a free, secure service from the US Social Security Administration website that allows you access to your personal Social Security record. Online services include applying for and managing benefits, verifying wages, and more!

In partnership with the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) System, we’re planning to offer one-to-one appointments in September and October 2025 focused on My Social Security access. NOPL serves the North Syracuse, Cicero, and Brewerton communities in the northern suburbs of Onondaga County.

This volunteer opportunity is part of our Digital Literacy Program, where trained volunteers assist individuals with operating devices, navigating the internet, and understanding everyday digital tools.

What You'll Do:

·Work one-to-one on an appointment-basis with adults to:

oCreate and log in to their My Social Security account.

oNavigate the website and understand available information.

oLearn basic digital skills needed for secure online access.

·Help bridge the digital divide for seniors and other adults with limited tech experience.

Requirements:

  • Volunteer for three-hour shifts in September and October 2025, scheduled according to your availability. Each shift will consist of either three 60-minute appointments or two 90-minute appointments.
  • Complete our Digital Literacy Volunteer Training to learn about the program's goals, the communities we serve, and how you can make an impact.

Location:

  • You’ll be assigned to one or more of these locations depending on your availability and preference.
    • NOPL North Syracuse Branch Library
    • NOPL Brewerton Branch Library
    • NOPL Cicero Branch Library

Questions:

  • Contact Digital Literacy Coordinator Lydia Torres, Ltorres@Literacycny.org, 315-643-0282.

More about My Social Security:

Having a My Social Security account allows one access to SSA online services that would otherwise only be available by phone or in-person. Online services include applying for and managing benefits, verifying wages, and more. One can even change their direct deposit information, request a replacement social security card, and change their address from the comfort of their home. The site also provides benefit verification letters to provide proof that one does or doesn’t receive social security benefits, supplemental security income(SSI), or Medicare.
