Imperial National Wildlife Refuge RV Resident Maintenance Volunteer
ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Please visit the new page to apply.
Imperial NWR was established in 1941 and protects 25,768 acres and 30 miles of wildlife habitat along the lower Colorado River. In 1938, Imperial Dam was completed on the river north of Yuma, Arizona. The waters stored behind the dam formed numerous backwaters and marsh areas along the edges of the river. These wetlands provide excellent resting, feeding, and nesting habitat for a variety of migratory birds and other wildlife. Imperial is one of three refuges (Cibola, Imperial, and Kofa NWRs) that make up the Southwest Arizona National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
The refuge is seeking 2 volunteers to assist with a variety maintenance opportunities including mowing, gardening, painting, cleaning of pit toilets and various maintenance on refuge housing. Other duties include assisting with outreach at the visitor center as needed. Applicants must be willing to assist with general maintenance duties and outreach at the visitor center to be considered. The work schedule is variable and applicants must be available to work weekends. Volunteers may have opportunity to assist Kofa and Cibola National Wildlife Refuges as well.
A valid driver's license is required. Completion of a defensive driving course (training is provided) is required in order to operate government vehicles. Tier 1 training through the USFWS is required to operate heavy equipment like tractors and backhoes. A fingerprint background check is required in order to access non-public areas of the refuge.
In return for 24 hours of work per week per person, we will provide a full hookup RV site (30-50a, water and sewer hookup) at Imperial NWR. There is a volunteer outpost building with a kitchen, shower and a washer and dryer. The refuge is seeking volunteers for approximately a 5 1/2 month stay (mid October through April 1, with some flexibility on start/end dates).

Mission Statement
Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
Description
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.
The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.
The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
