ORGANIZATION: AMERICAN BOARD OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE FOUNDATION

The American Board of Emergency Medicine seeks two Public Member Directors for its Board of Directors (BOD). ABEM encourages applicants from a variety of backgrounds and experiences who can provide a public and patient perspective to the deliberations of the BOD. The application window will close on Friday, May 30, 2025.

Background and Experiences

Candidates should represent different backgrounds that address one or more of the following areas:

  • A broad perspective on health care and public health.
  • An understanding of the health care environment and health care systems.
  • Experience with patient and family advocacy, including broad policy experience in systems issues.
  • Experience with non-profit organizational leadership and management, especially in the healthcare environment.
  • Experience with national-level or state-level medical association advocacy and management.
  • Knowledge and expertise in areas such as business and finance, health policy, health information technology, health care management, quality improvement, and communications and marketing.
  • Knowledge of medical education, simulation education, residency training, and certification.

The ABEM BOD is a working Board. Directors can expect to spend 30 days or more participating in ABEM travel, activities, and commitments per year. Some activities include, but are not limited to, attending two in-person BOD meetings of up to one week each in duration and virtual committee meetings throughout the year. Public Member Directors may be involved in Certifying Exam Case Development. Public Member Director terms are four years.

An application, a resume/CV and a letter of recommendation from a professional colleague who can speak to your qualifications and traits to be an ABEM Public Member Director are required.

Applicants will be interviewed by current Directors in advance of consideration by the BOD. The slate of applicants will be considered by the BOD at its July 2025 meeting.
