Volunteer positions within Maintenance and Facilities at Steamtown NHS support and assist National Park Service (NPS) staff in sustaining clean, safe, and well-maintained facilities for visitors and employees. The Maintenance / Facilities - Janitorial Assistant role contributes directly to this mission by helping preserve the appearance and functionality of indoor and outdoor public spaces, offices, and support areas.
This position supports Steamtown’s broader goals of operational reliability, resource stewardship, and visitor satisfaction. Volunteers serve as stewards of this mission by ensuring high standards of cleanliness, supporting minor maintenance tasks, and helping create a positive experience for all who visit or work in the park.
Maintenance / Facilities - Janitorial Assistant volunteers support Steamtown NHS’s maintenance and facilities operations by helping maintain clean, safe, and welcoming public and staff spaces throughout the park. Volunteers in this role contribute to the park’s operational readiness and visitor experience by performing custodial tasks, assisting with minor maintenance, and supporting special facility projects as needed.
Tasks may vary based on the individual’s experience, skills, and current park needs. All work must follow established safety procedures and Steamtown NHS standards. Assignments are typically performed under supervision, with appropriate training and guidance provided for all duties.
Maintenance / Facilities - Janitorial Assistant responsibilities may include:
- Performing general custodial duties using sweepers, vacuums, mops, floor polishers, and other janitorial equipment
- Assisting with the routine cleaning and upkeep of visitor areas, restrooms, exhibit spaces, and staff offices.
- Supporting minor repairs and facility maintenance, such as painting, plumbing, or carpentry tasks (as appropriate).
- Participating in seasonal facility tasks such as window cleaning, floor stripping/waxing, or snow/leaf removal.
- Supporting setup, breakdown, and cleanup for special events or facility-related projects.
- Assisting with the safe handling of cleaning agents and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Contributing to the care and upkeep of park equipment and workspaces.
