Volunteer positions within Maintenance / Facilities at Steamtown NHS support and assist National Park Service staff in maintaining operational readiness and visitor safety through skilled trade work and preventive maintenance. The Maintenance / Facilities - Auto Mechanic role contributes directly to this mission by providing repair, diagnostics, and routine maintenance on a wide range of park vehicles --helping ensure the fleet remains safe, reliable, and ready to support daily operations.
This position supports Steamtown’s broader goals of operational efficiency, visitor and staff safety, and resource stewardship. Volunteers serve as stewards of this mission by applying mechanical knowledge in a hands-on environment that helps keep essential park services running smoothly.
Maintenance / Facilities - Auto Mechanic volunteers support the park’s daily operational needs by assisting with the inspection, upkeep, and repair of park-owned vehicles and small utility equipment. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the safe, efficient operation of the park’s transportation assets, which support everything from facility upkeep and grounds care to emergency response and daily administrative functions.
All work must follow established safety procedures, accepted trade practices, and Steamtown NHS maintenance standards. Assignments vary based on skill level, experience, and current operational needs, and are typically performed under the supervision of qualified NPS staff. Completed work is periodically reviewed to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
Maintenance / Facilities - Auto Mechanic responsibilities include:
- Completing or assisting with routine maintenance and repairs on various park-owned vehicles and small utility equipment. Maintenance and repairs may include:
- Oil changes
- Brake repairs
- Tire rotations
- Engine diagnostics
- Lighting
- Exhaust
- Cooling components
- Diagnosing mechanical issues using standard tools and diagnostic equipment
- Supporting routine inspections and preventative maintenance of park-owned vehicles and small utility equipment.
- Documenting work performed, parts used, and any safety concerns or issues observed to the volunteer supervisor.
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with facility standards.
- Assisting with the care and maintenance of tools and equipment.
