Direct Care Hospice Volunteer
Direct Care Volunteers provide compassionate, non-medical support to hospice patients and their caregivers-wherever the patient calls home, including private residences, assisted living communities, adult foster homes, or nursing facilities. Volunteers typically visit once a week, with visits ranging from one to four hours, depending on the needs of the family - and your availability.
Each visit is guided by the patient’s condition and the caregiver’s needs, blending emotional support, companionship, and light practical assistance. This may include:
Offering a calm, caring presence and meaningful conversation
Reading aloud, listening to music, looking at photo albums, or watching TV together
Sitting quietly and providing comfort through gentle presence or hand-holding
Assisting with light housekeeping, laundry, or simple meal preparation
Helping with errands, transportation, or short walks
Supporting personal care routines such as dressing or hygiene (for trained volunteers)
Giving caregivers a much-needed break, time to rest, or the ability to leave the home
Whether through shared stories, a peaceful moment, or a chance for a caregiver to recharge, volunteers help enhance quality of life for both patients and families during an important and tender time.
Why Volunteer for Care Partners
Do you have a heart for people? Do you want to make a big difference in someone’s day? As a volunteer for Care Partners you can make a profound difference in a family’s life as a compassionate and calm presence who understands what they are going through. Our volunteers share our calling to bring comfort and help to others when they need it the most.
Without the help of people like you we could not provide the level of service families in our community deserve. Our specially trained volunteers are crucial in the daily operation and success of our program both in the office and supporting patients wherever they call home. Volunteers may keep a patient company for an afternoon, take them on an outing, help with projects around the house, give caregivers a break allowing them to run errands or get some rest or provide a specialized skill like giving a haircut or playing music. Whether you elect to visit patients, share a specific talent or assist office staff you will be playing a vital role in our organization.
About Us
At Care Partners we recognize that dying is not just a medical event but a personal one. As a not-for-profit, community-based hospice our goal since we were founded in 1982 has been to provide uniquely personal and exceptionally compassionate care and support to patients and their families. We serve Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas counties as well as parts of Yamhill and Columbia counties. We have opportunities for placement with patients throughout the Portland metropolitan region. Our main offices are located in Portland, OR.
Volunteer Orientation
Volunteer Orientation is offered throughout the year. Our training process ensures that volunteers are knowledgeable and confident as they enter their volunteer service.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide exceptional care without exception.
Description
As a nonprofit, our charter and volunteer board require that we abide by our mission to deliver exceptional care, without exception. Our mission drives how we deliver care each and every day. We believe that equal access to basic resources is a human right. Support from community members allows us to help people with terminal illness. Since 1982, we’ve been providing the care we would want for our own families to people experiencing serious illness. We offer a customized plan for each person based on their goals, needs and preferences. Along with hospice and palliative care services we offer grief support groups for our families as well as the community including our LGBTQ+ grief and bereavement program.
