ORGANIZATION: Manatee Literacy Council

Imagine living in a world where reading a medicine label, filling out a job application, or helping your child with homework feels impossible. For thousands of adults in Manatee County, this is their reality. But it doesn’t have to be - not with your help.

At the Manatee Literacy Council, we believe that literacy changes lives. We empower adults with the reading, writing, and language skills they need to thrive - and we rely on passionate volunteers to make that possible.

You don’t need to be a teacher to change a life or speak a second language. You only need a heart for helping others and a willingness to learn. We provide the training, support, and materials - you bring the compassion and commitment.

Whether you have an hour a week or a few hours a month, your time can make a world of difference.

About Manatee Literacy Council

Location:

3501 Cortez Rd. W., Suite # 6, Bradenton, FL 34210, US

Mission Statement

to empower Manatee County adults to independence through literacy.

Description

1 in 5 adults in the United States struggles with basic literacy and numeracy.
They read, write, or do math at or below a third-grade level. That means:

  • They may not be able to read a bus schedule or follow directions on a prescription bottle.

  • Filling out a job application or creating a resume can feel overwhelming.

  • Helping a child with homework becomes an impossible task.

  • Managing money, reading bills, or understanding rental agreements is a daily challenge.

These aren’t just skills - they’re essential tools for independence, employment, and participation in our communities. And when adults lack them, it affects not just their own lives, but their families and the local economy.

At the Manatee Literacy Council, we’re working to change this, but we can’t do it alone. We would love for you to join us in creating a stronger, more literate Manatee County.
