Are you a Social Scientist or Researcher with a passion for early childhood development, education reform, or animal-human empathy? We’re looking for a skilled volunteer to help us design a research questionnaire for a pioneering project that could shape the future of humane education in South African schools.

About the Project:

We are introducing a humane education curriculum into foundation phase classrooms (ages 6-9), specifically targeting children who have exhibited signs of aggression or violence. The goal? To foster empathy for animals as a catalyst for emotional development, behavioural change, and improved social outcomes.

Your Role:

As our volunteer Social Scientist, you’ll play a critical role in validating this innovative approach. We need a three-phase questionnaire developed to evaluate the program’s impact on participating learners:

  • Pre-Intervention: Establish baseline attitudes and behaviours.

  • Midpoint: Assess early indicators of change.

  • Post-Intervention: Determine the measurable impact of the curriculum.

The Ideal Volunteer:
  • Background in psychology, sociology, education, or a related field.

  • Experience with questionnaire design, particularly with young children.

  • Skilled in measuring behavioural and emotional development.

  • Passionate about creating systemic change through education and empathy.

Why This Matters:

Your contribution could provide the data needed to advocate for empathy-based learning to be officially integrated into the national curriculum. Together, we can break cycles of violence, inspire compassion, and change the trajectory of young lives-starting with how they relate to animals.

Help us turn a compassionate idea into policy-changing proof.

Apply now and be the reason change happens.

Mission Statement

The Society for Animals in Distress partners with communities to nurture One Health and One Welfare principles, providing access to veterinary care, education, and animal welfare initiatives that enhance animal health and human well-being while promoting environmental stewardship. Description

At the Society for Animals in Distress (SAID), we’re more than just a veterinary care provider-we’re a movement for change. Dedicated to improving the lives of animals and people alike, we bring professional veterinary care to pets and working animals in low- to no-income communities, ensuring they receive the help they deserve.

But our mission doesn’t stop there. We believe in building a kinder, more empathetic world from the ground up. That’s why we focus on educating foundation-phase children, planting the seeds of empathy and compassion for animals at an early age. By shaping young hearts and minds, we’re paving the way for a brighter future-one where care, respect, and responsibility define the relationship between humans and animals.

Powered by the generosity of donors, innovative income streams, our dedicated staff and, a passionate network of volunteers, SAID delivers life-changing services that create lasting impact. Every service we provide is guided by our commitment to excellence and tailored to the resources available, ensuring we maximize our ability to uplift both animals and the communities we serve.
