The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site preserves the birthplace, lifelong home, and final resting place of the nation’s 32 nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt retreated to this estate during times of crisis and brought world leaders here to discuss some of the most pivotal events of the 20 th century. Today, the site encompasses "Springwood," the Roosevelt family’s home, gardens, and hiking trails. Nearby is the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, managed by the National Archives and Records Administration.
The National Parks of Hyde Park, NY seek friendly and helpful individuals to serve as Volunteer Tram Operators on the campus of the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site.
Duties
Volunteer Tram Operators are responsible for transporting visitors, often with some physical impairment that precludes movement on their own, to various public attractions throughout the campus of the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. The operator also responds to requests for emergency assistance delivering first aid or other equipment to sites where visitors become incapacitated and, on some occasions, transporting them to their own vehicles or areas where they can be treated.
Volunteer Tram Operators are also responsible for light tram maintenance.
At all times, Volunteer Tram Operators are expected to follow the same safety regulations and best practices as NPS employees
Time Commitment
Minimum of one, four-hour shift per week on a regularly scheduled day and time. A volunteer’s shift is determined based on the volunteer’s availability and the park’s needs. Tram operations are seasonally available from May to October. Volunteers are expected to communicate any scheduling conflicts as soon as possible to the park’s Volunteer Coordinator.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Valid U.S. driver’s license
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to lift ramp weighing approximately 20 pounds
- Ability to operate Motrec E840 tram, which lacks power steering
No prior experience is necessary. Training and orientation will be provided by the park and is mandatory for all new volunteers.
