Great Basin Visitor Center Operations

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Volunteers will staff the Great Basin Visitor Center in Baker, Nevada. Main duties will include providing information to visitors, including trip planning, suggestions for activities such as hiking and camping, driving directions for the surrounding area, information about cave tours and other ranger programs, and general advice. There will be opportunities for informal interpretation, especially discussing the purpose of this national park and what the larger Great Basin is. The volunteer will also provide accurate information and good customer service by answering phone calls. Must be able to coordinate with other staff to ensure accurate and updated of information about general park operations. Other duties will include playing the park movie upon request, answering radio calls, and sharing information with the other visitor center.

This volunteer could be responsible for opening and closing the building, including counting money and completing a shift report to account for sales. Volunteer will sell items from the Western National Parks bookstore, operating a non-government cash register and credit card machine. Will be accountable for sales and change fund each day. Must pass a federal background check before work may begin.


Expense Reimbursement for the volunteer: Housing may or may not be available. If the Volunteer owns their own RV, there are several options. Reimbursement for an available RV site in town may be one possibility. If available, a dry campsite in the park may also be a possibility. While working as a volunteer, the Park will pay for the VIP's RV propane tank fill-ups. If the Volunteer uses their own vehicle for travel to and from work, fuel reimbursement is 14 cents a mile.


The length of this VIP position is negotiable, depending on the needs of the park and the availability of the VIP(s). Candidate must have their own lodging, although park may offer an employee RV site.
