Fort Union National Monument, an International Dark Sky Park, is seeking an enthusiastic individual or couple to volunteer. The selected candidate(s) will have the opportunity to work in the visitor center and exhibit area greeting the public, answering questions, giving information, and working with Junior Rangers along with conducting a range of interpretive programs outdoors. Volunteers will also operate audio/visual equipment, answer phones, support the cooperative association’s retail operation, and assist with special events, historic weapon demonstrations, costumed living history and outreach. Shifts are generally 8 hours long and each volunteer will be working 32 hours a week. Reliable personal transportation and a valid driver's license are required (nearest general services are 35 miles away; all paved roads).

Each volunteer must complete a separate application and submit a resume inclusive of interpretive and volunteer experience.


A successful applicant(s) to the position will complete the free Foundations of Interpretation course prior to arrival. Foundations of Interpretation - Interpretation of Natural and Heritage Resources

This opportunity is ideal for those who enjoy working with the public and have an interest in history and nature. Volunteers should be able to stand/walk/hike for moderate periods of time, and willing to give outdoor interpretive programs of limited duration. Typical hours for this position are from 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM inclusive of a 30-minute lunch and two 15-minute beaks.

The park will train volunteers, and provide all necessary equipment, materials, and online training to safely and professionally conduct required duties.

An RV pad may be available for a volunteer willing to work 32 hours per week. The RV pad (13 feet wide and 36 feet long, not a pull-through) has amenities including water, electrical, septic hook-up, and free laundry facilities nearby in the adjacent employee housing area. The housing area is located less than 1-mile from the Visitor Center. There is limited cell or television signals in the area. Wellness and exercise equipment along with a park library are available on-site for use.

Commitment time frame(s) run from April through October 2026. The position requires a commitment of no less than three months.


Work will be under the guidance, support and direction of the Chief of Interpretation.
