GreenThumb community gardens are developed, led, and cared for by dedicated volunteers who critically upkeep community gardens as public green spaces.
Family Community Garden is a 12,000+ sq ft food-producing green space supporting families and community members for multiple generations. During this volunteer day, participants will engage in a hands-on project to plant a vast, native pollinator garden. This is a great opportunity for those interested in getting involved with a community garden! Bring water, snacks, and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. Please note that some activities may involve lifting heavy material and moving, bending, and squatting for long periods.
Groups of 10 or more can sign up by contacting the volunteer coordinator at Kyleen.Sanchez@parks.nyc.gov.
This event is co-hosted by NYC Parks GreenThumb. We are proud to be the nation’s largest urban community gardening program, sustaining over 550 gardens throughout New York City. With GreenThumb’s support, community gardens are centers of environmental justice, ensuring that our city is fairer, safer, and greener for all. GreenThumb’s events are free and open to the public.

Mission Statement
Established in 1978, GreenThumb is proud to be the nation's largest urban gardening program, sustaining over 550 community gardens and supporting thousands of volunteer gardeners throughout New York City. GreenThumb gardens create hubs of neighborhood pride and provide a myriad of environmental, economic and social benefits to the neighborhoods in which they thrive. GreenThumb's mission is to support and educate community gardens and urban farming across the five boroughs, while preserving open space. By providing free garden materials, technical assistance, educational workshops, and seasonal programs, GreenThumb supports neighborhood volunteers who steward community gardens as active resources that strengthen communities.
Description
GreenThumb was initiated in response to the city’s financial crisis of the 1970s, which resulted in the abandonment of public and private land. The majority of GreenThumb gardens were derelict vacant lots renovated by volunteers. These community gardens, now managed by neighborhood residents, provide important green space, thus improving air quality, bio-diversity, and the well-being of residents.
