We are looking for a basketball enthusiast to join our Coaching Team and help us put together a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for the 2025-2026 basketball season. Individuals who have experience coaching would be welcome to work with the SoulGentz basketball team (which serves high school boys). Our current season ends on June 21st. There are currently no plans for summer play - however, this can be explored with the right coach.
Over the past season, we have struggled to find playing opportunities for the young men in New Jersey, partially because many of the other teams' schedules don't align with ours. We have also found few teams that have high school programs. Less than 5% of our players make their high school teams leaving them with nothing to do during high school basketball season. Despite our sometimes "dry" calendar, we continually attract new players. They are highly competitive, so we decided to incorporate a 3-on-3 tournament as part of their regular season to keep them active and engaged.
The Tournament Director will work with the current Coaches to develop the rules and schedules with the goal of running the Tournament from September to June (is it a League? Dunno!). Whatever format it will be, we want to be able to introduce it before our season ends on June 21st.
The Tournament Director would be welcome to attend any remaining practice we have on any Saturday (Downtown Newark) until June 21st to meet the current players and coaches. Otherwise, most of the work can be done virtually over the summer months. A sense of the NJ and/or NYC youth basketball landscape would be tremendously helpful.

SoulPhamm was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the state of New Jersey on June 25, 2021 and is the "birth-child" of Coach Luis ("Lou") and Dr. Leisa Herrera ("Mz. Doc"). The organization exists to provide training to young people in a variety of sports and performing arts and unique opportunities to display those talents through competition and performance. By integrating mentoring, life skills, opportunities for community service and academic enrichment to the athletic/artistic program, we help make our scholar-athletes as well-rounded as possible, capable of meeting and overcoming any challenges they are faced with. Although Coach Lou passed away suddenly in January 2021, the official launch of SoulPhamm was held on June 26, 2021, which coincided with his birthday weekend. SoulPhamm will recognize its own founding, as well as the achievements of our young people every year on the fourth Saturday of June, as a tribute to the life and legacy of Coach Lou.
