ORGANIZATION: Koreshan State Park/Florida Park Service

image_20250507103118

Learn about the fascinating history of Koreshan State Park and how this place came to be a place that would be preserved for future generations to enjoy!

Koreshan State Park has a rich and ecclectic history and it's founders donated the 200 acres to the Florida Park Service in the 1960's so it's unique culture could be preserved for generations to come. Tour Guides learn about the history, the people and the buildings and share this knowledge by leading 90 minute tours around the settlement as a fundraiser for the park.

Tour dates are added to the calendar when we have volunteers to manage them so this interpretive program is generally only scheduled when we have the volunteers to provide them. Each visitor pays $10 to join the walking tour and the money raised stays in the park to help with the preservation and restoration of the Settlement.

Learning the material can be done by starting as a Docent, spending a couple hours a week talking with visitors and answering questions. Then, the tour script is introduced. Taking tours from other volunteers, reading a book and various other web links is all it takes to get started.

You must speak english well but those of you that speak a second language would be fantastic for Spanish or French speaking visitors. You must be able to be on foot for up to two hours.

About Koreshan State Park/Florida Park Service

Location:

3800 Corkscrew Rd, Estero, FL 33928, US

Mission Statement

to provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting and restoring natural and cultural resources. The objective in park planning is to achieve an equitable balance between preserving natural resources and providing public access for outdoor recreation.

Description

Koreshan State Park offers a window into the lives of a unique and eccentric pioneer group that made its home under towering oaks on the banks of the Estero River.

In 1893, the Koreshans, a religious sect founded by Dr. Cyrus R. Teed, moved here and built a settlement based on a commitment to communal living and a belief that the universe existed on the inside of the Earth. Living celibate lives, the enterprising Koreshans established a farm, nursery and botanical gardens.

The park is home to 11 immaculately restored and nationally registered historic buildings erected by the Koreshans between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A quiet and peaceful refuge amid busy Fort Myers, the park's interpretative and natural resources provide great opportunities to learn and to enjoy nature.

At our park we utilize volunteers to assist with maintenance, events, visitor services, and interpreting the park and its history. There is likely something for each person that can fit into a variety of schedules.
