ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

General description:

The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is seeking to fill two volunteer positions, open to either individuals or a couple possessing an RV, that will assist with a watercraft station that targets aquatic invasive species at Redfish Lake, Idaho. These positions will join one Idaho State Department of Agriculture employee and one Recreation Resource Management of America volunteer and will be supervised by Sawtooth National Recreation Area staff.


Responsibilities:

The primary roles and responsibilities of these positions are: through field- and classroom-based training, learn the aquatic invasive species that threaten waterbodies of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the possible vectors of transport, and methodologies related to watercraft inspection and decontamination; assist in organizing and maintaining watercraft inspection equipment; interface with watercraft users and provide education and interpretive information on the ecological and economic consequences of aquatic invasive species; conduct watercraft inspections for invasive plants and animals and record relevant data; conduct light physical work such as lifting up to 20 pounds (chairs, folding tables, sun canopy); spend extended periods of time (~8-10 hours a day) out-of-doors in potentially inclement weather.


Preferred qualifications:

Experience with invasive species or watercraft inspection not necessarily required, but beneficial. Strong verbal communication skills, helpful personality, and desire to maintain non-confrontational interactions with watercraft owners are highly desired. Comfortability/experience in using and operating computer tablets is preferred.


Work environment and schedule:

The inspection station is located outdoors at the Sandy Beach boat ramp of Redfish Lake. Transporting of inspection equipment between the boat ramp and the Stanley Ranger Station of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (~5 miles) will also occur. The work schedule will be three days a week, typically on or near Saturday and Sunday.
