The Detroit People Mover is looking for volunteer Transit Ambassadors to greet and assist passengers as they enter the stations. We are looking to make the People Mover riding experience more personable and seamless, so that riders with questions can get assistance from a helpful volunteer.
Transit Ambassadors will recieve a $25 transportation/parking stipend for each shift, up to $50 for the day.
Transit Ambassador volunteers will assist during the 2025 Detroit Grand Prix during the following dates/times:
- Friday, May 30th 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
- Saturday, May 31st 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
- Sunday, June 1st 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
The transit ambassadors will:
- Greet people entering the People Mover Stations
- Answer questions about Detroit / The People Mover
- Help people navigate to their final destinations
- Recommend nearby shops, restaurants, attractions
- Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for People Mover Riders
Transit Ambassadors will be provided training beforehand and a "cheat sheet" clipboard with FAQ and answers. Stations and trains are monitored by transit police and CCTV control operators for your safety. People Mover Staff will be available on-site and by phone to answer any questions.
No experience volunteering is necessary, however the following skills would be helpful in this role:
- Knowledge of the downtown Detroit area
- Knowledge of the People Mover & how to ride
- Experience in customer service and/or other volunteer roles
- Enthusiasm for helping others

The Detroit People Mover is an enhanced public transit service that connects residents and visitors to their downtown Detroit destinations with high frequency and reliability.
Description
The DTC is owner and operator of the DPM. The Detroit People Mover is a fully automated, light rail system that operates on an elevated, single-track guide way loop in Detroit's central business district. The system provides connections between the courts and administrative offices of several levels of government, sport arenas, exhibition centers, major hotels, and commercial, banking and retail districts. Service is frequent, unencumbered by vehicle or pedestrian traffic, and conveniently available throughout the central business district. The integration of eight of the thirteen People Mover stations into pre-existing structures links over 9 million square feet that allows patrons to travel unimpeded by outside elements.
The DTC provides service to its customers according to a seven-day schedule, which is free to ride in 2024. A fleet of fully automated vehicles, which are deployed in two car trains, provides this service. These vehicles are propelled by two linear induction motors per car which move the steel-wheeled vehicles over the system's 2.9 miles of continuously welded, steel rail track. Each vehicle is heated or air conditioned as required for customer comfort. When in full loop operations and maximum train service, the vehicles are scheduled to provide arrivals in 5 to 8 minute intervals. Completion of the entire route takes approximately 15 minutes.

- This is a Done in a Day opportunity and there is no prior training or ongoing commitment needed.
- Must be at least 18
- Orientation or Training
- Shifts are 3-4 hours in length.
- Volunteers should have enthusiasm and good communication skills. A training video will be sent out to all new volunteers. Volunteers will be required to interact with the public in a respectful manner.
