You can make a difference serving your Kansas City neighbors at Bishop Sullivan Center! Our friendly and efficient pantry staff is waiting to welcome you as a volunteer. We need your help to serve 20-50 families each shift! Your shift would be on Monday from 9 am - 12 pm.

Volunteer Purpose

The Bishop Sullivan Food Pantry Assistant will work with the Food Pantry Coordinator to serve the needs of our food pantry clients with dignity during their monthly food distribution.

Tasks

  • Pack items according to pantry direction
  • Organize non-perishable, protein, produce and bread items in an accessible and efficient way
  • Inspect, sort and organize produce as instructed
  • Load carts and safely transport items to the client vehicles
  • Observe all food safety regulations as guided by staff
  • Clean and organize food pantry
  • Interface with staff and patrons in a manner consistent with the agency’s mission

Competencies

  • Able to approach situations with calm
  • Volunteer must be able to push/pull/lift 25+ pounds on a consistent basis
  • Empathetically listen, while maintaining boundaries consistent with agency guidelines
  • Passionate about serving pantry clients
  • Adaptable and flexible
  • Easily approachable
  • Enjoys organizing to help identify/institute efficiencies
  • Ability to be trained and coached in a fast paced atmosphere

Description

Food: Bishop Sullivan Center operates two food pantries and One City Cafe, a community kitchen that provides nutritious lunch and dinner every weekday.
Jobs: Our employment programs seeks to remove barriers that prevent people from finding and keeping employment. We also operate two computer labs and assist with job searches and resume building.
Aid: We provide financial assistance to low-income families in the form of utility, rent or other needed assistance.
