Become a Volunteer Companion for an Older Adult

Are you someone with kindness, compassion, and a little time to share? We're looking for dedicated volunteers to offer companionship and support to older adults in our community. Whether you're available for regular visits or occasional check-ins, we’ll match you with someone who shares your interests-so every interaction is enjoyable and meaningful for both of you.

As a volunteer, you can help provide:

  • Friendly Visits - Share stories, laughter, and quality time.

  • Respite for Caregivers - Offer a short break for those providing daily care.

  • Check-in Calls - Provide routine support, caring conversations, and wellness check-ins.

Make a difference in someone’s life-and enrich your own. Join us in building connections that matter.

About NEIGHBORHOOD COMPANIONS INC

Location:

PO BOX 21962, DUNDALK, MD 21222, US

Mission Statement

Neighborhood Companions, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Baltimore County, Maryland, dedicated to improving the lives of older adults aged 60 and over. Our mission is to provide essential volunteer transportation and companionship services, enabling older adults to live independently, feel safe, valued, and loved within their communities.

Description

The program is designed to use volunteers to transport or accompany individuals on their rides to medical, social, educational, or shopping trips. Companion volunteers will help through weekly in-home visits a few hours a week. Activities include being a friend who listens and provides encouragement, sharing interests and hobbies such as having a meal, doing a puzzle, going for a walk, playing cards, or providing a break for family caregivers. We also plan to host a monthly Sunday Dinner in the community, where volunteers will serve meals to older adults.

Volunteer drivers and companion volunteers must pass a background screening and drivers must carry state vehicle insurance. Drivers and companion volunteers indicate their availability and info is entered into Assisted Rides software and clients are matched based on schedule compatibility and geography. Volunteers are provided with details on client needs, such as using a folding wheelchair or walker, and matched with those they feel they can transport safely and comfortably. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and will have to fill out an application, require reference checks, interview, and attend mandatory training facilitated by Neighborhood Companions, Inc. staff.
