The 75,000-acre Saranac Lakes Wild Forest is part of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. The most prominent features of this unit are the many lakes, ponds, and rivers. These waterways are to this unit what mountains are to the adjacent High Peaks Wilderness. The unit's 144 water bodies range from small ponds entirely owned by the State to large lakes with a mix of State Land and private lands.
Location: Towns of Brighton, Franklin, Harrietstown, Santa Clara and Tupper Lake in Franklin County, and Towns of North Elba and St. Armand in Essex County
Volunteers can work independently or have the option to meet with other volunteers to pick up and remove litter in the most visited areas, including Lake Clear Beach, Middle Saranac Lake Beach, Hotel Pond, Little Green Pond, Indian Carry, and Floodwood Road. At these locations, volunteers can help with picking up litter, maintaining privies, and maintaining fire rings. Volunteers are provided with supplies including orange trash bags, gloves, trash pickers, volunteer safety vests or shirts, and workers compensation. No skills or experience are required; anyone is welcome to volunteer including individuals, students, residents, groups, and employers. Volunteers enjoy performing volunteer services while exploring trails.
