Hudson River Special Management Area

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: MORGAN DUKE CONSERVATION SOCIETY

The 5,550-acre Hudson River Special Management Area, also known as the Hudson River Recreation Area, or sometimes simply Buttermilk, is located on the eastern shore of the Hudson River in the Lake George Wild Forest. The unit had hiking trails and hand launches.

Volunteers work independently or can choose to meet up with other volunteers to pick up and remove litter along trails, including Darling Ford, Bear Slides, Sandy Beach island, campsites, and parking lots. Volunteering allows for a self-guided and flexible schedule. It is recommended to visit the Hudson River Special Management Area after major holidays such as Memorial Day, the weekend after July 4th, and Labor Day. Volunteers can also help with tasks like painting picnic tables, trail gates, and outhouses, as well as reporting downed trees, major erosion, or other concerns.

Volunteers are provided with supplies including orange bags, trash pickers, gloves, and workers' compensation. No skills or experience are required as volunteers are given training and support from the Morgan Duke Conservation Society.
Individuals, residents, students, groups, and employers are all welcome to volunteer.
