Salineño Wildlife Preserve Volunteer

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

The Salineño Wildlife Preserve is a world famous birding hotspot on the shore of the Rio Grande in south Texas. The Preserve has approximately three acres, including parcels owned by the Valley Land Fund and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Volunteers will continue a 42 year tradition of feeding wild birds, restoring and managing native plant gardens, and serving as interpretive naturalists--interacting with visitors, most of whom have traveled to the Lower Rio Grande Valley from around the continent and the world to see birds, both rare and common, that are not found elsewhere in the United States.

Requirements and Qualifications

• An interest in maintaining Lower Rio Grand Valley native plants and habitats for butterflies and birds, and sharing that knowledge with visitors. Plus an avid interest in bird watching. Experience and knowledge of the region’s birds is not a prerequisite. You will be working with and learning from experienced gardeners and birders throughout, including many of our very knowledgeable guests.

• Physical ability for gardening tasks, primarily weeding and watering, using shovels, hoes, rakes, pruners, wheelbarrows, and wagons.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (grain sacks).

About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Location:

5275 Leesburg Pike, MS: NWRS Visitor Services, Bailey’s Crossroads, VA 22041, US

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
