ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Gettysburg National Military Park working with the Mid-Atlantic Network Inventory and Monitoring Program is seeking skilled birders to join our Bird Monitoring Program. As a Bird Monitoring Volunteer, you will conduct point-counts at pre-selected sites within Gettysburg NMP.

By volunteering, you can integrate your birding hobby with scientific research, be part of a monitoring program that helps manage our parks for the enjoyment of future generations and contribute to a regional monitoring initiative that will increase our understanding of the status of bird populations in our national parks. For more information on the monitoring program see our Bird Monitoring Protocol Webpage.

Potential volunteers must be able to accurately identify most Mid-Atlantic breeding birds by sight and sound. Volunteers must have good hearing and eyesight, be capable of hiking on varied terrain, the ability to navigate with GPS or compass and map and be willing to attend a training seminar.

Volunteers are expected to meet a required time commitment which includes a 2-hour mandatory protocol and safety training as well as a total of 4-8 hours conducting bird surveys in the field.

Our timeline of this program will fall between the following dates:

Preseason 2 hr training: 5/12-14/2025 (TBD)

Field surveys: 5/25/2025-7/19/2025
