Program Overview:
Volunteers will assist instructors in providing one-on-one or group technology support for older adults, helping them improve their digital literacy and gain confidence in using technology. Volunteers will work closely with older adults, walking them through easy-to-follow instructions and ensuring they understand key concepts. Your role will help create an environment of patience, empathy, and encouragement while assisting older adults to build their technological skills. In addition, you have the option to select a session you would like to lead.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the delivery of step-by-step training for older adults on using various tech tools (Ipads, phones, computers, etc.).
- Provide hands-on support during training sessions, ensuring participants can follow the steps and complete tasks successfully.
- Foster an encouraging and supportive environment, addressing any concerns or questions from participants.
- Tailor support to the individual learning pace and preferences of each participant, adjusting the process as needed.
- Encourage participants to practice independently while offering guidance and reinforcement when necessary.
- Help facilitate intergenerational relationships by fostering meaningful communication between younger volunteers and older adults.
- Assist instructors in organizing and preparing materials and resources for each training session.
- Report any challenges or feedback from participants to help improve future sessions and support.

Mission Statement
Neighborhood Companions, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Baltimore County, Maryland, dedicated to improving the lives of older adults aged 60 and over. Our mission is to provide essential volunteer transportation and companionship services, enabling older adults to live independently, feel safe, valued, and loved within their communities.
Description
The program is designed to use volunteers to transport or accompany individuals on their rides to medical, social, educational, or shopping trips. Companion volunteers will help through weekly in-home visits a few hours a week. Activities include being a friend who listens and provides encouragement, sharing interests and hobbies such as having a meal, doing a puzzle, going for a walk, playing cards, or providing a break for family caregivers. We also plan to host a monthly Sunday Dinner in the community, where volunteers will serve meals to older adults.
Volunteer drivers and companion volunteers must pass a background screening and drivers must carry state vehicle insurance. Drivers and companion volunteers indicate their availability and info is entered into Assisted Rides software and clients are matched based on schedule compatibility and geography. Volunteers are provided with details on client needs, such as using a folding wheelchair or walker, and matched with those they feel they can transport safely and comfortably. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and will have to fill out an application, require reference checks, interview, and attend mandatory training facilitated by Neighborhood Companions, Inc. staff.
