Job Title: Trail Rover


Job Description:

A trail Rover will assist park staff by contacting visitors on trails, at overlooks, and in developed areas of Russel Cave National Monument. Roving volunteers will meet and greet the public, provide information, and respond to emergency or unusual situations as needed. Roving volunteers restock trail guides at Trail heads, update bulletin boards throughout the park, and complete daily roving reports to note maintenance needs, wildlife observations, and resource protection issues.


Responsibilities:

Developing knowledge of park resources, park regulations and agency policies. Communicating

effectively by park radio. Completing reports on the same day as the rove. Being punctual and performing roves as scheduled in proper uniform. Conveying regulations and policies. Following standard operating procedures. Being friendly and respectful to our visitors.


Skills Needed:

Enjoy working with the public. The ability to remain calm and courteous during occasional hectic or emergency situations. Communicate effectively with the public and park personnel. They need to be reliable. Must be able to perform the physical requirements. You need a driver license and a personal vehicle.


Physical Requirements:

The volunteer must be able to carry up to 25lbs, walk for prolonged periods of time, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, squat down, and to bend over.


Hazards:

This volunteer opportunity is a field position. This means your job is outdoors and subjected to various and unpredictable weather. It also means you will be around wildlife and various of positions plants (such as poison ivy/ oak/ etc..). There are other hazards like falling, sun exposure, floods, and heat.


Expectations:

You would expect to start your shift by arriving at the Visitor Center where you will pick up a radio and supplies. From their you will head to the agreed on trail site to preform your roving duties. You would greet visitors and help with any questions, keep a count of viators in an area, conditions of the trail, and check trail amenities. Once you've completed your shift you would return to the visitor center to drop off the radio, your reportings, and communicate to the park staff of any concerns you came across.


Uniform:

The only item provided will be a volunteer shirt which must be worn only while on shift. You may wear jeans, khakis, or modestly length shorts. Tennis shoes or hiking shoes are required. A belt is optional. Your clothes must be clean and presentable for every shift.
