United Hearts of Arizona

Volunteer Grant Writer Job Description

Introduction

United Hearts of Arizona (UHA) is a small non-profit that operates within the City of South Tucson and southern Tucson. Our mission is provide assistance to the residents of southern Tucson in order to help them improve their education and learn ways to get out of poverty. We provide folklorico dance lessons, an annual Shoe and Jacket drive for over 200 students, breast cancer awareness conferences, and resource assistance.

What we need

As a small non-profit UHA does not have any paid staff. We are experiencing more requests for assistance, especially during the winter holiday Shoe and Jacket drive. We would like to bring a volunteer on board who has experience writing and researching grants for families in need, improvement in education grants, arts appreciation for students, and grants for in-need zip codes.

Skills needed:

· Someone with experience researching and writing grants for the above areas listed.

· Someone with the ability to research these grants on their own.

· Someone with the ability to submit grants in the timely manner required by the grantors.

· Someone who can advocate for the population we serve

Time commitment:

· We would ask that you spend at 5 hours a month researching and writing grants.

· We ask that you provide a weekly email to the executive director of work that you have done that week.

· We ask that you attend board meetings that are held approximately every other month during the year. However, meeting attendance increases to twice a month during November and December as we get closer to the Shoe and Jacket Drive

Benefits of volunteering with UHA:

· Being in on the ground floor of a rapidly expanding non-profit

· Networking with government agencies, school boards of SUSD and TUSD, and law enforcement

· Being part of an organization where you can see your efforts causing real and lasting effects in Tucson.

Next Steps:

· We can take more than one new grant writer

· You will report to Maria Cardenas, Executive Director of UHA

· We would like to interview any candidates who are interested in this position to answer questions and give a fuller picture of what the organization is doing in the community.

Mission Statement

Mission Improving the lives of children and families in Arizona by providing resources that will help them to be prepare for personal lives, professional accomplishments, and responsible citizenship.

Description

The mission of United Hearts of Arizona is to improve the lives of children and families in Arizona by providing resources that will help them to be prepared in their personal lives, their professional accomplishments, and be responsible citizens. To that end we provide the following opportunities and aid for the residents of the City of South Tucson and southern Tucson: Annual Shoe and Jacket Drive, Folklorico Classes, Breast Cancer education conference, and helping out families in need throughout the year. Education is very important in this community and making sure we remove as many obstacles as possible to achieving that education is key to getting families out of poverty. If a child does not have a warm coat or warm shoes to get to school on a cold winter day, they may not attend at all. This is unacceptable. UHA wants to foster a better education experience for all children in our community, so we provide a new winter coat, new sneakers, a new book and personal items for students ranging in age from pre-school to 8th grade. So far, we have served over 2,000 families with this program. The Folklorico classes are free to the public and we 3 sessions a year. The total number of students served is over 500. Each year in October we provide THE ONLY Bi-Lingual (Spanish/English) Breast Cancer Conference in Tucson. We have had over 300 attendees during the last 3 years of the conference.
